In Sylvania, Ohio, 15-year-old Morgan Duris was hit by a vehicle and killed January 21, 2010, when crossing the street to catch a school bus.
Fatal Accident at Bus Stop
On January 21, 2010, at 7 a.m. Cynthia A. Anderson, 66 of 915 Lincoln Avenue, Toledo, Ohio, was driving her SUV westbound on Erie Street, Sylvania, on her way to work. She failed to stop for a school bus and hit and killed Northview High School freshman Morgan Duris who was crossing the street. Morgan’s stop was the last stop on a bus route that traveled along Erie Street in Sylvania, Ohio.
The bus driver and ten students on the bus witnessed the accident. According to witnesses and the local authorities, the flashing red lights and stop sign were activated on the stopped bus.
Driver’s Inattention Kills High School Student
Later Ms. Anderson indicated she was trying to pass the oncoming school bus before it turned on the flashing red lights. According to police reports, Ms. Anderson also admitted she had the radio on rather loud, "I was listening to that and my mind was kind of on that and that’s what did it." She stated that she did not see the teenager crossing the road in front of her. According to records in Sylvania and Toledo municipal courts, Ms. Anderson has had four traffic violations in the last 15 years that included speeding, running a red light, and violating rules for turning.
The fifteen-year-old was taken to Flowers Hospital in Toledo with serious injuries and. died about 7:45 a.m.
Ms. Anderson, the driver of the SUV, was taken to the Sylvania Police Department for questioning. In February Ms. Anderson was indicted by an Ohio grand jury for aggravated vehicular homicide. Ms. Anderson pled not guilty to the charge and could face up to five years in prison for the offense if convicted.
