The RMS Titanic sank at about 02:20 on the morning of 15 April 1912.  Of the 2,240 people aboard, only 706 survived.

The large number of fatalities that accompanied the sinking of the RMS Titanic was due primarily to an insufficient number of lifeboats aboard the ship.  Regulations of the time required ships to carry enough lifeboats for 50% of their passengers; in the wake of the sinking of the RMS Titanic, officials realized that these regulations were outdated.  New sea liner safety regulations implemented after the sinking of the RMS Titanic required the use of clearly marked safety exits in all areas of the ship.  The new regulations also stated that sea liners must carry enough lifeboats for all passengers, that they must conduct safety drills, and that they must notify passengers in case of emergency.  Life-vest designs were improved; radio communication laws were revised, and standards for hull and bulkhead design were improved.
