On 18 July 2009 and 20 July 2009 respectively, two separate fighter jet crashes in Afghanistan killed two and injured two.

The deadly crash of 18 July 2009 involved a U.S. Air Force F-15 fighter jet. The jet crashed at 3:15 am Kabul time in Nawur, Ghazni. Both American pilots were killed. Coalition forces sealed off the scene of the accident immediately and Afghan police were denied access. The USAF has determined that enemy fire was not involved.

On 20 July 2009, a Royal Air Force Tornado GR4 crashed on take-off at the Kandahar Airfield. The crash occurred at 7:20 am local time. The wreckage burned for five hours. Both pilots ejected safely, though they suffered minor injuries. The United Kingdom’s Ministry of Defence has ruled out enemy actions as the cause of the crash; investigators are analyzing the damage the craft sustained to determine the cause of the accident.
